Adult Children Age 19 to 26

RE: HEALTHCARE REFORM

THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT

ADULT CHILDREN AGE 19 TO 26

Dear PIBF Member:

Your adult children between the ages of 19 to 26 years of age can be added to your PIBF health plan. These adult children can be added regardless of their residence, full-time student status, tax dependent status or marital status. If your dependent between the ages of 19 to 26 is married, their spouse and/or their children cannot be added to the PIBF health plan.

Beginning in 2014, children up to age 26 can stay on their parent’s employer plan even if they have another offer of coverage through their employer.

The dependent will have the same coverage under the PIBF health plan as you, your spouse or dependent children under the age of 19, provided you have met the eligibility requirements under the PIBF plan. The adult child’s coverage will terminate upon the following conditions:

  • The last day of the month in which they turn 26 years of age.
  • The member is no longer eligible under the rules of the plan.

If you are not eligible for health coverage at the beginning of the calendar year, but you establish or re-establish eligibility for health benefits during the year, you will have an opportunity at that time to add any dependent children, including those age 19 to 26 for health coverage under your PIBF plan.

The Pipeline Industry Benefit Fund does require a copy of the child’s birth certificate to establish the parent/child relationship along with the child’s social security number. Once the birth certificate is on file in our office, it will not be required again. You will also need to provide us with the child’s complete mailing address in the event they do not reside with you.
